How Does Botox Work?
In order for your muscles to contract, your nerves send out a neurotransmitter, causing your muscle cells to contract or shorten, When Botox is injected, it temporarily prevents the release of this neurotransmitter, reducing muscle contractions and allowing your muscles to relax and become less stiff.

Injectable Treatments for Facial Wrinkles and Folds

Facial wrinkles and folds add years to your appearance and can also make you look tired or angry. Fortunately, dermal injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Juvéderm™ XC can erase signs of aging and give you a smooth and rejuvenated look in just minutes.
Erase the lines of time in minutes with BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a very simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe vertical lines between the brows (frown or glabellar lines), horizontal lines on the forehead, and smile lines by the eyes (crow’s feet). Dr. Hawk also uses BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to treat migraine headaches.
One 10-minute treatment and a few tiny injections, and within days there will be a noticeable improvement, which can last up to 4 months. Individual results may vary. Dr. Hawk may suggest a dermal filler such as Juvéderm™ to address skin folds or give the lips a fuller appearance.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of wrinkles in 2002 and can be used in people from 18 plus years of age.
As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. But, with Juvéderm™ XC injectable gel, you don’t have to just sit back and let it happen!
Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds — like those parentheses or smile lines around your nose and mouth (known as nasolabial folds). Using a dermal filler like Juvéderm™ XC is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.
Injectables (Dermal Fillers)
Juvéderm™ XC is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Juvéderm XC flows easily into the skin and is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment. It is available in two formulations — XC Ultra and XC Ultra Plus — which allows Dr. Hawk to tailor your treatment to your individual needs. The procedure is quick and easy; the injection itself usually takes only about 15 minutes. Results are instant!
Juvéderm™ XC provides a smooth, natural look and feel, so everyone will notice (but no one will know). Combine it with a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment for even more amazing results!
Dr. Hawk recommends that you avoid any blood thinning medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), gingko biloba, garlic, vitamin E, alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes for at least a week prior to receiving the treatment, in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection sites. We also offer products that you can take before and after treatment to further reduce the risk of these issues. For more information, please ask about these products when you make your appointment.
If this is your first visit, Dr. Hawk will ask about your medical history, including any allergies or medications, and answer any questions that you may have.
If Dr. Hawk determines that BOTOX® Cosmetic and/or Juvéderm™ XC is right for you, he will then examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the location and depth of wrinkles and folds and determine the specific treatment needed to address them.
You should avoid the following for at least 24 hours after treatment:
- Strenuous exercise
- Consumption of alcoholic beverages
- Extended exposure to sun or heat
- Rubbing the area for the first 24 hours
- Facials
You may experience pain, tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injection sites. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection sites, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. Be sure to call our office if you have any redness and/or visible swelling that lasts for more than a few days (or any other symptoms that cause you concern).
